The Blog : September 2005

There are widespread reports today that Mike Myers has signed on to play drummer Keith Moon in a planned biopic of British band The Who. While I imagine that Myers would probably do a fine job of portraying the wacky alcoholic's madman antics, there's still a HUGE problem with this bit of casting: Myers, at 42 years of age, is already 10 years older than Moon was at the time of his death. Google Blog SearchIt may soon be time to kiss Technorati goodbye (thank God). Google finally has its own search engine for blogs, and the beta version is up and running at http://blogsearch.google.com. Unfortunately, the results don't seem to be anywhere near as current as Technorati's. In fact, the most recent NTB post I could find on the engine is already a week old. Based on the company's past performance, however, one has to assume that Google will work out these problems eventually. One note for bloggers: Google Blog Search only indexes the content contained in a blog's RSS feed, not the website itself. So if your feed doesn't include the full-text of your posts, only a small portion of your content will be indexed. Just one more reason why everyone should be publishing full-text RSS feeds. If you're a Bob Dylan fan, you'll probably want to tune into PBS tonight and tomorrow when the network airs "No Direction Home," a two-part documentary covering Dylan's career from 1961 to 1966. Directed by Martin Scorcese, the film won rave reviews this month when it was shown at film festivals in Telluride and Toronto. If you miss this week's broadcast, you can always pick up the DVD. It's already on sale.

Bill Gates and his bossI knew there was a good reason why I use a Windows PC...
Seeking to capitalize on the popularity of the 2004 cult movie "Napoleon Dynamite," Microsoft Corp. on Tuesday screened a video spoof for software developers in which the film's celebrated anti-hero reports to work as a programer for the world's largest software maker. In a face-off between the two nerd icons, Jon Heder, the actor who plays Napoleon Dynamite, beats Gates in a slapping match to become the head of the software giant.
I haven't found the video on the web yet, but when/if I do, I'll post a link. Update: The video is now online at IFILM. Watch it here. [Yahoo! News] Microsoft's Gates faces off with Napoleon Dynamite

The first time they did it for the fans. This time, they're doing it for... American Express?
British rock trio Cream, will whip up a "Strange Brew" for American fans next month when it plays its first U.S. arena shows since breaking up in 1968, the band announced on Tuesday. Guitarist Eric Clapton, bass player Jack Bruce and drummer Ginger Baker will play Madison Square Garden in New York on October 24, 25 and 26. [...] Tickets go on sale on September 12 for American Express cardholders, and to the general public on September 19. [Emphasis added]
Fortunately, the band wasn't as picky about its payment methods when I saw them at London's Royal Albert Hall in May. [Yahoo! News] Cream reuniting for 3 New York shows next month
